With Sherman to the Sea

Late Eli Coleman buried with Honors last Tuesday.

Funeral services for the late Eli Coleman were held at the house Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Arthur Trott, of the M.E. church officiating.  Burial was in Portland.

The house was filled with sympathizing friends and relatives, and the floral offerings were both numerous and beautiful.  Vincent Taylor led the service used by the G.A.R. circle, closing by placing the flag across the breast of the sleeping soldier.

Mr. Coleman had been ill but two weeks of paralysis and from the start his condition showed a steady decline.  He was born in New York, in 1827, and in 1844 settled in Orange township.  Mr. Coleman was one of the pioneers who transformed the wilderness into  fertile country and owned a fine farm not far from Portland at the time of his death.

In 1886, after the death of his first wife, Mr. Coleman married Miss Macy Lyda, who survives him, as do his four daughters, Mrs. Will Curry, the Misses Katherine and Esther, of Portland, and Mrs. Roger Smith, of Caro.  Mrs. E.B.Harwood is a daughter by the first wife, their four children being grandchildren of the deceased.

In the service when his country needed his help, he went forth to battle.  He was with Sherman on his march to the sea, and participated in a number of important battles.  As a good business man and farmer, Mr. Coleman ranked with the best, and when he died there were many friends to mourn.
